Hardeman County Hall of Fame

• Thomas Jones Hardeman
Formed in 1823 from Hardin County and Indian lands, it was named in honor of Thomas Jones Hardeman (1788-1854) He was the first county clerk and served with Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812. He moved to Texas and fought for its independence in 1830.

• Col. Ezekiel POLK
Grandfather to President James K. Polk, was a Revolutionary War hero. His son William also lived in Hardman County and his other son, Samuel, was the father of the President.

• William Polk was the first chairman of the county court and the son of Ezekiel Polk.

• Thomas McNeal
The father of the prominent McNeal family of Bolivar. It was at McNeal's house that the first courts were held. He was the son-in-law of Ezekial Polk.

• Jacob PIRTLE
One of the first justices, raised a crop of corn near Thomas McNeal's in 1821.

• Joseph WARNER
Settled at Fowler's Ferry on the Hatchie about 1821-22. His place was known as Warnersville.

• Jim Stewart & Mae Axton
The Founders of the greatest R&B record label of all time, STAX Records are Middleton's own brother and sister team of James and Mae Stewart. Ms. Stewart married an Axton, and the labels name was taken from the ST in Stewart and the AX in Axton. The label was the recording home of Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Issac Hayes, Rufus & Carla Thomas, Sam & Dave, Johnny Taylor, Booker T. & the MG's and hundreds of top hits). James and Mae were the backbone of the entire label. Ms. Axton's famous R&B record store in Memphis is credited with bringing in the great talent. The Stewarts were born in Middleton, TN in the 1930's and stayed until the late 1950's, when they moved to Memphis to start a record label.

• Bailey Howell
Born January 20, 1937 in Middleton, TN, the 6-foot- 7legend from Middleton High School (1951-55) and was named All-American (1955).
His Pro Basketball Highlights include:

* NBA's Detroit Pistons (1958-64)
* NBA's Baltimore Bullets (1964-66)
* NBA's Boston Celtics (1967-70)
* NBA's Philadelphia 76ers (1970-71)
* Six-time All Star (1961-64, 1966-67)
* NBA championships with Boston Celtics (1968, 1969)
* Led the Pistons in scoring four seasons (1961-64)
* Led the Pistons in rebounding three seasons (1961-63)

• Louise Mask , the flashlight queen, is well known as the owner of the Luez Theater, first located on West Market--where Joe's Restaurant is currently in business. Ms. Mask is well known for her stern rule. Movies were kept quiet or you were out. Just follow the flashlight on your way out the door! She operated the theater from 1936 through the early 1970's, and opened the "new" location on Main Street in 1957, complete with air conditioning.
